MDS Nordion of Ottawa, Ontario, has received its first sample of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) from its Russian partner, Isotope.
Nordion entered into a supply agreement with the Russian firm in September for a supplemental supply of Mo-99 until 2020. This recent sample of Mo-99 will be evaluated at the company's processing facility in Ottawa.
Verification of quality is necessary to obtain product registration and regulatory approvals before Nordion can begin receiving supply for licensed distribution, according to the firm. Isotope serves as the link between Rosatom, the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, and end users in both the Russian and international markets.
The first line of production for Mo-99 began on December 18 at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors in Dimitrovgrad, Russia.
